- How Microsoft's Magentic-One benefits from being open source
- Its open source license is one of the most permissive
- Strong communities lead to improvement and adoption
The query responses I provided to Reworked on November 24, 2024:
Reworked: How does Magentic-One's open-source nature contribute to its development and potential adoption in the enterprise market?
Gfesser: The MIT License attached to Magentic-One is one of the most permissive open source licenses because its only requirement is that the license be included any time it's used, modified or distributed apart from the GitHub repository from which Microsoft has made it available.
Less permissive licenses have additional requirements, such as the need to publish code after it has been modified. While this wouldn't be required in the case of Magentic-One, its open source nature permits engineers to submit proposed changes to Microsoft's original GitHub code.
Over time, the ability to submit proposed changes to Magentic-One should be expected to foster a community of engineers in a similar way that other popular open source package communities have been fostered because not only is the code accessible to engineers, but engineers can drive the direction that the code takes.
As the community around Magentic-One grows, broader enterprise adoption is also likely to grow because community growth typically signals that demand exists for it to be supported either for standalone usage or for incorporation into other third party products.
It's important to emphasize Microsoft's recognition that Magentic-One is in its early stages and can make mistakes, with the directive that it be used solely for research and non-production usage.
However, its current state shouldn't be viewed as a drawback. Microsoft is making this package available now because it recognizes Magentic-One still faces challenges, and it is looking for a community to build around it in order to continue to improve it. Strength in numbers, as they say.
