The responses I provided to a media outlet on August 1, 2018:

Media: I'm looking for quick things that companies need to understand about open source. These could be tips or information.

Gfesser: Commercial entities exist behind many open source software products, which can be a positive aspect because of the stability that this typically brings, and because enterprises often want support agreements.

However, keep in mind that some software products are open sourced solely because they did not receive commercial success, and are looking to increase market share.

The key benefit of open source software products is NOT their being free of licensing costs (and some commercial options are sometimes not free).

Open source software products are often widely adopted because of the visibility these provide with respect to code and product roadmaps, and the participation that these welcome from the community in terms of general feedback, bug reporting, and the ability to submit changes.

The typical enterprise application built with with an open source technology stack contains hundreds of open source library dependencies, and development teams will need to eventually become acquainted with many of these.

Due diligence should be performed around the adoption of open source for the enterprise just like the adoption of commercial, because there are implications behind every technology choice.
