Blog Note: Part 3 - Blog migration underway

Thank you for visiting this version of my blog, which is currently under construction. I am working to migrate my blog from its longtime host, Typepad, to its new host, Ghost.

The key reasons I've chosen to migrate to Ghost are as follows:

  • As of year-end 2020, Typepad was no longer accepting new customers, and I want to be proactive before Typepad (presumably) eventually shuts down
  • Ghost seems to provide the best of both worlds when considering the state of my current blog and options provided by subscription networks like Substack
  • Ghost is available as open source, should I decide to self-host in the future
  • Ghost provides many open source and commercial templates and integrations
  • Ghost provides basic hosting at the same price as Typepad, even though the initial catalyst to migrate was my goal to minimize hosting expense

Two of the twelve domains that I currently own, erikgfesser.com and erikonsoftware.com, will continue to point to my Typepad hosted blog until migration and sunsetting are complete. Additionally, some posts in this version of my blog will continue to point to old posts in the interim.

Following migration, I plan to post a summary of the steps I took to complete this move. For now, note that some steps involve temporarily making use of Wordpress, because it provides needed plugins to partially automate the migration.

While I am working to clean up some initial formatting issues introduced by the migration, I also plan to prioritize the most recent 10% of posts dating back to mid-2022, addressing the remainder as a subsequent step following migration.
